A look at the R50 million homes up for sale in one of South Africa’s oldest suburbs

The small suburb of Bishopscourt in Cape Town is a highly sought-after residential area for wealthy South Africans.

Alexa Horne, the managing director of Dogon Group Properties, said that the suburb had maintained its property values due to the demand for property here being well in excess of supply.

Bishopscourt is a small, affluent residential suburb in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town that is enviably positioned – nestled against the slopes of Table Mountain, and bordering the world-famous Kirstenbosch Gardens, said Horne.

“The suburb got its name from the residence of the Bishop of the Church of England of South Africa, which was built in the 1850s by the first Bishop of Cape Town. The property was established on the farm known as Boscheuwel, originally owned by Jan van Riebeek,” added Horne.

Sought-after by the elite, Bishopscourt comprises some of the most valuable and exclusive real estate in South Africa. In 2015, it was ranked the sixth richest suburb in South Africa.

“In the past 18 months alone, Dogon has concluded seven high-worth sales in Bishopscourt with a collective sales value of R184,7 million,” said Horne.

“Bishopscourt lies at the top of the Constantia Valley. With its tree-lined lanes, swathes of greenbelt and open stretches of land, the Constantia Valley includes some of the most desirable property in Cape Town as is indicated by the prices and demand.”

This is an area of large gardens, mature trees, mountain streams and vineyards. The various greenbelts provide a network of trails, perfect for horse riding, mountain biking, running and walking, and you’re never too far from stunning views of the mountains and surrounding greenery, Horne said.

It’s sheltered from the worst of the wind, and the views are fantastic, looking straight up at the mountain or out over False Bay. For all these reasons and more, it is little wonder that young and old alike covet property in this prestigious suburb,” added Horne.
