Another Stellenbosch University student found dead in a hostel



The University of Stellenbosch has confirmed the death of one of its students, Ky Rowe at Simonsberg men’s residence

Rowe, a 20-year-old soccer player allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday, 9 August. 

STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY STUDENT FOUND DEAD

Ky Rowe’s death comes just weeks after  a second-year BSc chemistry student, 20-year-old Siphokazi Ntozini, was found dead at the Heemstede women’s residence on 23 July.

As previously reported, South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk told The South African that the woman’s body was found by security personnel at a student hostel in Claasen Street, Stellenbosch and the police’s investigation is ongoing.

Stellenbosch University spokesperson, Martin Viljoen, said the woman was a resident of the Heemstede Residence where her body was found and told The South African that no foul play was suspected in the matter.

In a statement, Viljoen confirmed Rowe’s death.

“It is with great sadness that the University of Stellenbosch confirmed the death (Tuesday, August 9, 2022) of a student and resident of Simonsberg men’s hostel on the Stellenboch campus,” he said.

Senior director of student affairs at the university, Choice Makhetha said with the passing of Ms Siphokazi Ntozini, a resident of the Heemstede residence, still fresh in their minds, the campus community now grieves the loss of another young person from their midst. 

“We assure the family of the support of the SU community. We are also thinking of the student’s friends and co-residents in Simonsberg, who need to deal with losing a friend.

“Staff members of ER24 and the SU Centre for Student Counselling and Development counselled students and staff of the residence on Tuesday evening.”

Simonsberg men’s residence said their prayers and thoughts are with Ky’s family during this  difficult time.

Thank you for sharing a part of your life with us. Our prayers and thoughts go out to Ky’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
