Bafana Bafana make strange announcement, fans go furious

Mzansi’s Bafana Bafana have faced the wrath of fans on Twitter after announcing the CAF 2022 FIFA World Cup play-offs fixtures.

If the post was a tongue-in-cheek jibe at Ghana for drawing a strong Nigeria, the attempt did not land well.

STRANGE TWITTER POST FROM BAFANA BAFANA

Failing to qualify for the final 2022 FIFA World Cup play-offs was upsetting enough, but then the country’s senior football team Twitter went ahead to announce the fixtures.

South Africa, having battled against Ghana, Zimbabwe, and Ethiopia for a place in the draw, only managed to finish second behind the Black Stars on goal difference.

But the dubious winning penalty that earned the Black Stars the win uncovered claims of match-fixing after referee Moguetta Ndiaye’s work on the night. The South African FA requested FIFA to launch an investigation but it was ultimately unsuccessful.

Following the live draw that was held by CAF on Saturday, Bafana Bafana announced who the qualified nations will face in the play-offs, all while South Africa’s name is not on the lucky list.

FANS SLAM THE ANNOUNCEMENT

Predictably, Twitter users did not just find the announcement odd but it left many quite angry. Some of the first reactions came from two leading journalists who both responded with confused and amused emojis.

Here are some of the comments from fans that caught our eyes…

  • “Not sure if its your department that heads this stuff but you guys genuinely need to do better. Embarrassing,” said @Gonzosforever
  • “I’m a South African but what we are doing is disgraceful. Cant we accept the defeat in good fate? Kulunu mouri mputa,” said @BenopaOnyx1.
  • “Why you posting this because we didn’t even qualify??? But any ways…Good luck to Nigeria…they must not disappoint the continent,” said @GM_KekanaJr.
  • “Admin you are not even ashamed to tweet such things!!!!!” added @KgahliH1.
