The Toyota Corolla Cross has already become a major force in the passenger car market in South Africa in its brief existence – registering as the top-selling SUV in the country in March.
National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa data showed that the Japanese carmaker sold 2,384 units of the crossover vehicle last month, placing it ahead of the Volkswagen Polo Vivo and only behind the Toyota Hilux in all classes.
Toyota now dominates the SUV market, thanks to the new Corolla Cross, the Urban Cruiser (1,196), and Toyota Fortuner (1,082).
The Corolla Cross slots in between Toyota’s other options, such as the C-HR and the RAV4 models in terms of size and powertrain configuration, and comes in at a starting price of R360,400.
Hatchbacks and SUVs dominate the landscape in South Africa when it comes to the type of car consumers prefer to drive, whether it be their strong price appeal, design, or driving comfort, and ability to navigate some of the more challenging road conditions in the country.
