With the summer months slowly transforming into autumn, we need some clever ideas to keep enjoying stone fruit in the coming cooler months. Food writer, Karen Hart has developed a delicious plum jam recipe that will ensure you can enjoy this fruity flavour right through winter.
There is no doubt that stone fruit is best at the peak of their freshness during the summer months. However, with a few preserving hacks you can enjoy their goodness any time of the year. This easy plum jam recipe is lip-smackingly delicious and will certainly perk up your breakfasts and desserts.
Tips when preparing plum jam
Start your planning the day before by placing all the ingredients in a large glass bowl, covering them with cling wrap and leave to stand overnight in a cool place.
Then, the next day, before you start cooking your yummy plum jam, sterilise and prepare the glass jars first. Wash the jars in warm, soapy water and rinse well ensuring any soap residue has been removed. Next, place the jars in an oven pan, lined with a clean tea towel. Place the oven pan with the jars in a preheated oven for 10 minutes.
During the cooking process, it might be a bit challenging to know when the jam is ready. However, with this clever hack of Karen Hart, you will know when your jam is cooked. Before you start cooking the jam, place a saucer in the freezer. When you want to test for a set after boiling the jam for 20 minutes, spoon a dollop of jam onto the cold saucer. Give it a few seconds. If you can draw your finger through it and it stays separated, your jam is ready. As easy as that!
