Trainer Joey Soma has announced that Durban-based jockey Serino Moodley will partner three-year-old Red Saxon in Saturday’s R5 million Grade 1 Hollywoodbets Durban July.
Leading apprentice Rachel Venniker was scheduled to make history as the first female rider to compete in the great race, but, as reported by The South African website, was injured in a riding accident on Monday.
Serino Moodley could make race history
Joey Soma told the Sporting Post that Winning Form-sponsored Serino Moodley met their original criteria of experience of the Hollywoodbets Greyville track.
“Many jockeys called for the ride. At the end of the day it was about Serino’s capabilities and experience. On any other day, we could have chosen any one of the riders who called. For now, Serino was already at work on Red Saxon today (Tuesday) and it is all systems go. We wish Rachel a speedy recovery and hope to see her at the races on Saturday!” he added.
If Serino Moodley were to win the Hollywoodbets Durban July, he would become the first Indian rider in history to lift the prestigious trophy.
Red Saxon will jump from gate 14 and will carry 53kg.
The latest Hollywoodbets odds show Red Saxon is available at 40/1.
The 2022 Hollywoodbets Durban July will take place on Saturday, 2 July.
The first of 12 races is due off at 11:50 with the main race scheduled for 16:00.
Gates will open at 09:00.
