Orlando Pirates legend recalls the day a tokoloshe appeared in a match

Remember the Orlando Pirates former goalkeeper Innocent Mayoyo? The former number one has a not-so-innocent story to share.

TOKOLOSHE DURING ORLANDO PIRATES MATCH AGAINST AMAZULU

During a throwback chat with Kick Off, Mayoyo described the day a tokoloshe stood next to a goalkeeper against AmaZulu.

Had it not been for a white referee, maybe nobody would have seen the small mystical creature that day.

Mayoyo suggests that black men can’t see the tokoloshe, or at least on that afternoon of the match.

“Shadreck Biemba was in goals for AmaZulu for that particular match, and the referee was a white guy, Stan Swaart, with his linesmen being black guys,” he said to Kick Off.

“The game was about to start when Swaart starts counting the AmaZulu players… 8, 9, 10… and in goals 11, 12.

“Because he is a white person he was able to see another short goalkeeper, a midget, standing next to Shadrack Biemba. It was a tokoloshe.”

TOKOLOSHE FORCES MATCH TO END

According to Mayoyo, the referee Swaart made futile efforts to remove the tokoloshe as the 12th extra player.

The final decision was to prematurely end the match, thanks to a hard-headed Durban tokoloshe.

“The linesmen and players couldn’t spot the tokoloshe because we were all black people,” he added.

“We were in Durban and Stan Swaart runs to Shadrack and says ‘Shadrack, remove this second goalkeeper!’

“That’s how the game was postponed because the second goalkeeper was too stubborn, he didn’t want to leave the field, instead the tokoloshe said Shadrack should be the one leaving the field not him.

“The referee’s whistle blew three times, Tswe!tswe!tswe! Match Abandoned.”
