South African striker reveals why he won’t play in the PSL

South African striker Darren Smith says he has no interest in plying his trade in the domestic scene because of the politics of the PSL.

Smith has been playing in Finland for the last two seasons and feels that outside influences can harm a local players career in the Premier Soccer League.

The 25-year-old has bagged golden boot awards in the last two seasons and said that the PSL of a high standard but he feels that his talents are appreciated more abroad.

“To be honest with you, I haven’t had any contact personally. I don’t know about my agent, but he is aware that at this point, I don’t have any desire to be in South Africa,” Smith said.

“I want to climb the ladder and no disrespect to South African football, it’s extremely high-level, but my main priority is to play abroad, and I just feel more like my ability is appreciated more over there.

“Nobody knows me, so nobody can speak in the other’s ears. I don’t have to go into that because I am sure you understand the politics of football.

“That is what I experienced in South Africa and many players experience it too where certain assumptions get placed on players and their football gets back to the ground because of these things and it is sad that this is happening, and it is something I want people to be aware of,” he added.

Smith is currently without a club but would prefer to continue his career in Europe rather than return to South Africa.

As a young player in South Africa he was shipped out on numerous loans after being acquired by Kwazulu-Natal club Amazulu. His loan stints were predominantly in his home town of Cape Town, but he would end his time in South African football at SuperSport United.
