We’ve got the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Saturday 15 January.

South Africans were furious on Friday when Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said the national state of disaster had been extended by a further month. The state of disaster is now set to expire on 15 February 2022.

The extension comes despite the move to lockdown level 1 and the further easing of restrictions.

Meanwhile, six prisoners escaped on Friday from the vehicle transporting them to court when it was ambushed before it reached its destination.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said the six suspects were en route to the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court on Friday when they escaped from custody.

“According to reports, the police truck transporting the prisoners was ambushed by three armed men driving a silver Audi vehicle at the corner of Barry Marais and Rondebult streets,” said Muridili.

Five of the six escapees were expected to appear before the court on charges of business robbery, attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm, said the police spokesperson.

Just in: South Africa’s state of disaster extended yet AGAIN

South Africa’s national state of disaster has been extended by a further month.

The state of disaster is now set to expire on 15 February 2022.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said that the extension considers the need to augment the existing legislation and contingency arrangements undertaken by the organs of state to address the impact of the disaster.

While the national state of disaster was initially set to lapse on 15 June 2020, the act provides that it can be extended by the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs minister by notice in the gazette for one month at a time before it lapses.

The government has relied on the regulations to introduce and give effect to lockdown restrictions, which it has used to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Prisoners escaped after police truck was ambushed by gunmen in Gauteng

The police in Gauteng have launched a manhunt after six inmates escaped custody on Friday, 14 January. The prisoners escaped from the vehicle transporting them to court when it was ambushed before it reached its destination.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said the six suspects were en route to the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court on Friday when they escaped from custody.

WATCH: Counterfeit goods worth R1bn worth of seized at Durban harbour

What’s really going on in Mzansi? counterfeit goods with a value of no less than R1 billion were discovered at the Durban harbour on Thursday morning.

As confirmed by the KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala, the illegal act was in operation for a full year.

The seizing of counterfeit goods worth R1 bn was captured on a video that quickly went viral on social media.

Police officers are seen at the Bayhead Port Terminal where a large container is opened to reveal the illegal cargo.

The officers are heard confirming that the first box from the Counterfeit goods at the Durban harbour carried perfumes.

Weekend weather for SA: High temperatures, thunderstorms across the countryy

WESTERN CAPE:

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued an extreme heat advisory for the Western Cape on Thursday afternoon, 13 January. The warning is in place from Thursday until the weekend and is expected to affect the City of Cape Town and the interior of the province.

The extreme heat advisory is in effect from 12:00 on Thursday until 19:00 on Saturday.

Shocker: Police van allegedly kills child in a hit-and-run

There’s serious trouble facing a police van driver after allegedly killing a child in a hit-and-run. The tragedy happened in Gauteng’s East Rand on Thursday.

According to the report which has circulated on social media, the 13-year-old child was killed KwaThema on the East Rand.

Reports say the police van did not stop to take responsibility, making the accident a hit-and-run. The deceased was with her 7-year-old brother, whom she pushed away in an apparent sacrifice to save his life.

It is further said that witnesses of the grim event, which happened in broad daylight around 14:20, quickly followed the police van before capturing its registration plate.

The driver of the police van is believed to be a female driver who was accompanied by an ununiformed male.
